Summary:
"Notes that educating the public about the importance of behavioral research and justifying the use of animals are growing challenges that all animal researchers share. However, the obstacles that impede the establishment and maintenance of animal research programs may vary depending on whether one is attempting to conduct research at a large or small institution or at a primary research or teaching institution, and on varying amounts of institutional support and resources. In addition to these obstacles, anyone conducting research with nonhuman animals needs to be well versed in laboratory animal welfare issues as well as the laws and regulations that are in place for the ethical conduct of research with animals. In this regard, this book is aimed primarily at faculty members who wish to start a laboratory animal research program or use animals in teaching at smaller institutions. The book is arranged in four parts, with each part serving a specific purpose. Part I of the book lays out the ethical framework for the use of animals in research. Part II includes chapters that give practical advice on methodological and animal welfare concerns in conducting behavioral research with animals, and how such research can be conducted at small, primarily teaching institutions. In Part III, the chapters provide a variety of creative strategies on conducting animal research in institutions with limited resources, for using animals in teaching, and for conducting animal research in high school settings. Part IV provides an overview of the regulations involved in conducting animal research. The editors hope that this book helps investigators to establish and maintain animal research programs and that it also proves of interest to those who want a refreshing perspective on teaching and conducting research with animals in psychology"--Intro.
