Summary:
"This book is the product of many years of work with people who have intellectual disabilities. Our treatment methods have evolved from actual experience with people who have intellectual disabilities as much as from the growing literature in this area. Our goal in creating this book is to present a clear way of understanding and working with people who have intellectual disabilities in addition to psychological disorders, and to share our hard-won lessons with other clinicians. Toward this end, we have used a number of case examples. The vast majority of these examples present an actual client with whom we have worked, not an amalgam of similar individuals nor a fantasized creation based on a prototype. Our thinking is that by using real cases, each with its own unique set of circumstances, symptoms, and reactions to treatment, we afford the reader the closest possible look at the workings of the therapeutic process"-Introduction.
