- Summary:
- The editors, Drs. Sam and Diana Kirschner, have sought to encompass the breadth of the media psychology field by inviting papers on both research and practice, because media psychologists engage in both, and each aspect is complementary to the other. The four chapters in the research section focus primarily on television, highlighting images conveyed in various programs and their influence on viewers, particularly the impact of violence and of overt sexuality on those who are watching and listening. These chapters emphasize how important it is for media psychologists to base their on air and written comments on factual evidence and not on personal opinion. It is critical that media psychologists be conversant with the scientific data regarding topics for which their expertise is sought and that they do not go beyond the data to please a talk show host or news room director. Some of the roles psychologists undertake and fulfill in the media are described and discussed in the practice section. These include roles in international radio, newsprint, television, and film. What is contained in the practice section provides a colorful smorgasbord of current happenings written by seasoned professionals who deal with the media daily.
