Summary:
This book explores the various components of a computer-driven information system and provides a framework for purchasing decisions for solo and group practitioners. The book is divided into four chapters. The first chapter focuses on technical issues related to computer software and hardware. Chapter 2 begins the process of evaluating a practice's specific needs. The chapter focuses on defining expectations of the new system and lays a foundation for purchasing a system. In particular, the importance of system flexibility is emphasized. Chapters 3 and 4 discuss the purchasing process, with emphasis on evaluation, selection, and negotiation of a purchasing or leasing agreement. Chapter 3 outlines the process used to identify potential system vendors, including sources of new and used hardware, off-the-shelf software applications, and customized programs, as well as preparation of a request for proposal when needed. Evaluation of potential vendors is followed by discussion of methods for selecting multiple vendor candidates. Chapter 4 continues discussion of the purchasing process, including issues of financing and maintaining and servicing a new system. The chapter concludes with an in-depth examination of contract language regarding a new system. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved)
