- This Decade of Behavior volume, dedicated to Herschel W. Leibowitz, examines research currently being conducted in the field of visual perception. In the spirit of applying scientific solutions to real-world problems, chapter authors analyze key work that has led to practical applications in fields such as traffic safety, industrial design, and public health issues. The opening section reprints a classic paper by Leibowitz on the symbiosis between basic and applied research. Subsequent sections reflect on and extend his work in psychophysics. They include chapters on clinical applications, such as the detection of glaucoma; visual accommodations, such as the controversy over the resting state of accommodation; interactions with visual information, such as optical illusions; traffic safety issues, such as night visibility; and finally, perceptual applications to other disciplines. This volume should interest not only psychologists studying perception but also those from related disciplines such as medicine, public health, physics, and the history of science.
