- Summary:
- To be comprehensive, this manual is necessarily detailed. Its detail will help the reader understand more clearly the multiple dimensions of an organization. I assume the reader who attains some skill in organizational consultation will abstract from and condense the outline to meet his or her own needs. My intention in preparing this manual is twofold: (a) to help formalize and professionalize the organizational consultation role, whether for consultation or internal organizational study and change efforts. Originally, I wrote it for organizational consultants and graduate students who intended to become consultants and (b) to assist managers who want to sharpen their assessment skills or who must undertake an effort to resolve an organizational problem or to integrate a new unit into theirs or to help the members of a newly acquired unit understand their own organization. Duncan, Ginter, and Swayne (1998) pointed out that internal organizational assessment is less well-developed than other areas of organizational assessment and suggest that conducting such assessment enhances organizations' competitive edge. Society needs people who can help its organizations do their work more effectively. I hope this volume will be a contribution toward meeting that need.
