Summary:
National and state law now mandate that school-based professionals provide education and care for children with health and handicapping disorders. "Health-Related Disorders in Children and Adolescence: A Guidebook for Understanding and Educating" provides succinct discussion of medical conditions that result in educational, psychological, and behavioral challenges for children with these disorders and the professionals who interact with them. The disorders range from the uncommon and poorly understood (e.g., Rett syndrome and Sturge-Weber syndrome) to the more common ones (e.g., sickle-cell anemia and childhood leukemia). Contributors to this volume are PhD-level clinical, health, or school psychologists who have years of experience dealing with children and adolescents with the disorders they describe. /// This book is intended for school-based professionals--teachers, school psychologists, school counselors, social workers, medical personnel, and occupational therapists--and parents of children with these disorders.
