Summary:
Almost daily the world media report some new discovery of important human remains, or some new claim to the return of existing remains, or some extraordinary scientific or historical advance achieved through studying human remains or the objects buried with them. This collection of essays, which arose out of a seminary organized jointly by the Institute of Art and Law and the Natural History Museum, examines such questions as the extent to which holding institutions should disclose the presence and identity of human remains within their collections, the implications of the movement and discovery of deceased monarchs and other persons of importance, the impact of the ECHR and national legislation on the holding and treatment of human remains, ecclesiastical attitudes and the obligations of those involved in construction projects where human remains are discovered. The author include lawyers, museum staff, academics and others, and they discuss how they interpret different curating collections and undertaking research. They explore what is meant by respect when talking about human remains and how do we demonstrate respect? Do we treat all remains the same way; are the recent dead treated differently from the ancient dead and do we treat different categories of people differently? If we don't treat everyone in the same way, why not and where are the boundaries; are all the boundaries for how museums and galleries sue remains (exhibition, teaching and scientific research) the same? Do we treat cultures that have disappeared (e.g. the Sumerians or ancient Egyptians) differently from living cultures? Does the context Egyptians) differently from living cultures? Does the context the remains are visible in change how we feel about respect and why do museums and galleries take the varied approaches they do? Book jacket.
