Summary:
The impact of nomadic peoples constitutes a distinguishing feature in the history of Central Asia, the Iranian highlands and the Middle East, where political rule frequently depended on the military might of mounted nomads. State powers recruited nomad contingents, and nomad conquerors founded states, the Mongol Empire being simply the most successful such enterprise. In this reader, leading experts in Iranian, Central Asian and Islamic Studies explore the uses of this particular kind of military forte as well as its consequences for stale politics. The spotlight is directed at Iran and adjacent areas, where nomadic and settled groups coexisted in various forms of spatial proximity and political alliance. The chapters comprise surveys and case-studies that focus mostly on power relations between supreme rulers, who were sometimes themselves rooted in nomadic life, and lesser regional or nomad leaders. What were the strategies applied and pitfalls encountered in using nomad military resources? How efficient were nomad allies in the eves of their imperial lord or partner? What held these alliances together? What distinguished political systems built upon nomad conquest? How was warfare that embraced nomad troops visually represented in book illustrations? This volume highlights for the first time the workings and effects of the region's composite and partly nomadic armies, and thus presents a comprehensive overview of a hitherto understudied chapter of world history.
