Canvassing book consisting of specimen leaves and illustrations; fullbroadside prospectus; 6 leaves of "Notices of Mansfield's Life of General Scott"; lined subscription order leaves.
Binding: leather binding; front cover stamped in blind and gilt "Subscriptions/ For/ Mansfield's/ Life of/ General Scott."
This edition of Mansfield's Life of General Scott published in 1846.
Local Notes:
Zinman 1003 has title page excised and bottom half of full broadside prospectus excised. Front fly-leaf inscribed "Daniel L. Allens/ Book Feb 28th 1855," followed by 8-line poem and the first of Allen's several home addresses: "277 Hudson St./ N.Y." Allen worked as a clerk for a series of businesses while in New York. Subscription order leaves show evidence of use as Allen's account book to document boarding and a variety of other personal expenses from his arrival in New York City in March, 1854 to 1857; another three pages contain signed testimonials by Allen's employers. Allen frequently returns to his home town of Sommerville, N.J.
