Summary:
Papers from a July 2009 seminar, convened in Pretoria by the Africa Institute of South Africa, assess the response to HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa, the center of the pandemic, focusing on two main themes: the impact of HIV/AIDS on the security sector, and an examination of human security from a gendered perspective. Contributors include those representing regional and national security institutions, as well as scholars, activists, and practitioners. Chapters cover the unintended effects of relying on the military in preventative measures against HIV/AIDS, the impact of HIV/AIDS and gender issues on policing in South Africa, human rights implications, and gender-based violence at the University of Zimbabwe. Contributors recommend greater attention to the physiological and social factors associated with sexual and gender-based violence and exploitation, particularly in the context of coercive relationships and multiple concurrent partners. The book will be of interest to activists, community health workers, and policy makers. There is no subject index. Juma is the Kenyan ambassador to the African Union. Klot is senior advisor to the Social Science Research Council. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
