Summary:
Ozu International covers all phases of the career of Yasujiro Ozu (1903-1963), from the auteur's silent period through his final color film, An Autumn Afternoon (1962). This anthology moves beyond discussions of Ozu as a traditional, regional filmmaker and instead presents him as a world director with international influence and growing prestige, examining his films through the lenses of Japanese history, religion, philosophy, cinematic storytelling techniques, and media studies. The first half of this collection focuses on exploring the historical and cultural context of Ozu's works, while the second half considers how his films might transcend their origins and appeal to contemporary audiences around the globe. Ozu's greatest works-including I Was Born, But... (1932), Late Spring (1949) and Tokyo Story (1953)-challenge any notion that his movies are stody or old-fashioned, and these essays highlight the emotional, artistic, and spiritual appeal of this work.
