Summary:
Rethinking Disaster Recovery encourages a critical re-examination of the social inequalities that existed on the Gulf Coast before Hurricane Katrina and the progress that has been made in the fen years since the disaster. Uniquely, this volume contains moving sociological essays in which personally impacted scholars weave their stories of trauma, lass, displacement, and recovery into larger discussions of demographic, institutional, and social changes. Specifically, the volume highlights ways in which gender and sexuality issues, often overlooked in the literature, rise to the surface following a catastrophic event. It also considers the impact of the storm on various racial and ethnic groups, neighborhoods, and social institutions. Lastly, important methodological debates rise to the surface as scholars who lived through Hurricane Katrina reflect an the practical and emotional difficulties of conducting research through disaster. These insights into the day-to-day lives of survivors over the past ten years help illuminate complex disaster recovery processes and provide key lessons for all-too-likely future disasters. What happened in New Orleans after the media spectacle was over? How do experiences of recovery vary across social groups? Why are some able to recover quickly while others struggle? How do people put the pieces of their lives back together after a catastrophic disaster? Through on-the-ground observation and keen sociological analysis, Rethinking Disaster Recovery answers these questions and suggests new avenues for research. Book jacket.
