Contemporary Japanese architecture and urbanism specialist Bognar (architecture, U. of Illinois) presents an updated portable guide for visitors to Japan. The third edition opens with an introduction to the evolution and present development of Japan's architecture from the early Meiji period (1868) to 2012, to help the layperson understand the context of the 700-plus specific buildings described. Entries are organized in ten geographic regions, each further arranged by prefecture and cities/municipalities. Buildings are listed according to their proximity to others within an area, along a train line, or avenue, for visiting ease. Each entry includes the building/complex name, construction date, architects, address and detailed directions, and a QR code for online information. Illustrated with some 750 full-color photographs, the majority by Bognar, the text also contains 31 maps, an index of architects and their buildings, and index of buildings in chronological order.
