- Summary:
- The Aesthetics of Utopia analyses the decorative aspects of three Victorian planned communities in relation to the purposes and ideals of their creators. It begins where most source books on Victorian architecture finish-by looking for the reasons why particular styles of architectural decoration were adopted in given situations. The tastes of the time are discussed but the main focus is on the personalities of the patrons and architects of the three model communities and the importance of their beliefs, aspirations and motivations. Hidden detail has been uncovered, providing a new understanding of architectural decoration and a contribution to the understanding of Victorian architecture. Book jacket.
