- Biography/History:
- Castaigne was an internationaly known French artist who studied under Jean-Léon Gérôme and Alexandre Cabanel at the Académie des Beaux-Arts. He was born at Angoulême, France in 1861 to artist Eusèbe Joseph Castigne (1828-1902) and Mathilde Debouchaud. He had one brother Joseph Jean Destrains Castaigne (1859-1923) who was a poet. Castaigne's illustrations were in many American publications including Century magazine, Scribner's magazine, and Harper's. He died Angoulême in 1929.

- Contains one original handwritten letter by Castaigne to S. Weir Mitchell regarding his illustrations for Mitchell's novels and short stories. He discusses the translation of Mitchell's work, The adventures of François, into French and recommends Hachette as a possible publisher for the project. Accompanying the letter are four printed leaves. One is the title page from volume two of Mitchell's Hugh Wynne free Quaker, published by The Century Company in 1899. There are three leaves from The century magazine, August 1894 with illustrations by Castaigne.
