Currency depicts portrait of Robert J. Walker, Secretary of Treasury with seal in red.
Printed in green and black with ornate green reverse.
Fractional currency was introduced by the United States Federal Government following the Civil War. These notes were in use between 21 August 1862 and 15 February 1876, and could be redeemed by the U.S. Postal Service for the face value in postage stamps. Fractional notes were issued in 3, 5, 10, 15, 25, and 50 cent denominations.
"This note is exchangeable. For United States notes by the Asst. Treasurer and designated depositaries in the United States in sums not less than three dollars. Receivable in payments of all dues to the United States less than five dollars except customs."--verso.
