Summary:
In April 2011, the National AfterSchool Association (NAA) adopted new rigorous voluntary standards for healthy eating and physical activity (HEPA) in out-of-school (OST) programs. In addition to challenging programs nationwide to improve nutrition and physical activity through voluntary standards, NAA seeks to disseminate ideas and information that support the needs of professionals and programs in the OST field working to provide healthy environments and experiences for children and youth. The evidence base of the impact and effectiveness of healthy eating and physical activity interventions in the OST setting is continuing to emerge. By sponsoring this special issue, NAA provides a platform for the sharing of a range of research studies that can inform and shape current discussion of best policies and practices to support child and youth wellness. The body of work presented in this issue adds considerably to our knowledge of HEPA interventions in the OST programs, and highlights the substantial contribution towards childhood obesity we envision from our field.
