Place of Publication:
London ; New York : George Routledge and Sons, [between 1867 and 1873?] (London : Wyman & Sons)
Notes:
Imprint date range conjectured by cataloger. George Routledge and Sons began publishing under that name in 1865 and Wyman and Sons to print under that name in 1866. Bowman's Tom and the crocodiles, listed for sale in the publisher's advertisement on t.p. verso, appears to have first been published in 1867. Schimmel Collection copy has blind stamp ("M.S. ELMORE BOOKS & STATIONERY JEWELRY &C. FLINT, MICH.") of M.S. [i.e. Milan Solyman] Elmore (1833-1908) on front free endpaper. M.S. Elmore is listed in the Michigan State Gazetteer for 1867-1868 as a jeweler, bookseller and stationer; by the 1873 edition he is advertising as M.S. Elmore & Co. The publisher's cloth binding of this copy matches in style that of a copy of Bowman's Bear-hunters (Schimmel Fiction 449) dated from advertising evidence to ca. 1873.
Illustrations signed "HW" (frontispiece) or "H Weir" [i.e. Harrison Weir] and engraved by the Dalziel Brothers (signed: Dalziel sc).
Plates: "Pulling down the Deer." (frontispiece), "Captain Alexoff attacked by Wolves." (opp. p. 45), "Alexander dragged by the Elk." (opp. p. 114), "The Wolf at the Door." (opp. p. 146), "The Flight of Novitsky." (opp. p. 151), "Bear carrying off Alexander's Rifle." (opp. p. 226), "The Storm." (opp. p. 309), and "Novitsky and the Bear." (opp. p. 335).
Publisher's advertisement for the works of Anne Bowman ("Price 3s. 6d., each, Cloth, with Illustrations") on verso of title leaf.
Local Notes:
Schimmel Collection copy imperfect: 1 plate ("Bear carrying off Alexander's Rifle.") wanting.
Presented to the Penn Libraries in 2014 by Caroline F. Schimmel.
Schimmel Collection copy has stamp ("W.C. BELDING") on front pastedown and half-title leaf; ms. inscription ("Willie C. Belding Swanzey N.H. From C.S. Perry.") recording the reception of this volume. Belding is probably to be identified with William C. Belding (ca. 1865-1924) of Swanzey, N.H., or possibly with his father of the same name (1826-1909).
Schimmel Collection copy has blind stamp ("M.S. ELMORE BOOKS & STATIONERY JEWELRY &C. FLINT, MICH.") of M.S. [i.e. Milan Solyman] Elmore (1833-1908) of Flint, Mich., on front free endpaper.
Schimmel Collection copy bound in publisher's cloth (now red-brown); boards and spine double-ruled in black at head and foot; triple rules in black beginning on right board and extending across spine to left board to form on each a decorative frame around gilt title (on spine) and gilt title and illustration (on left board); author's name on gilt banderole at foot of spine.
Schimmel Collection copy: plate opp. p. 309 ("The Storm.") and 335 ("Novitsky and the Bear.") detached.
OCLC:
902015800
