- Summary:
- The Pritchett Century will stand as the most authoritative collection of the works of Sir Victor Pritchett, one of the century's greatest men of letters. Gore Vidal described Pritchett as "The best critic in the English language". Sir Victor's son Oliver has selected from among his fiction, criticism, essays, travel writing, and memoirs, and provided a Foreword. John Bayley's "In Memoriam" is a tribute to Sir Victor's life that almost spanned the century.
- The Pritchett Century ranges from the stories "When My Girl Comes Home" and "Cocky Oily" to discussions of the work of Salman Rushdie, Dickens, Tolstoy, George Eliot, and Saul Bellow; from selections from biographies of Chekhov and Turgenev to travel pieces on London and New York.
- At its original publication, Roger Angell said of The Pritchett Century in The New Yorker that it is "Splendid.... A much needed, elegantly assembled collection". And Publishers Weekly added: "Either as an introduction to Pritchett's work, or as a sampler for the uninitiated, this volume is a delight".
