The Cripps family was prominent Cirencester dating to the sixteenth century and gained their wealth from the wool trade. Wilfred Cripps attended Kings College and Trinity College, Oxford. His research in the decorative arts led Cripps to become a noted authority in silver and plate. His first book on the subject entitled Old English plate was published in 1878 and had nine later editions. He later became an advisor to the South Kensington Museum, now the Victoria and Albert Museum. Cripps also studied archaeology and excavated Roman sites in Cirencester.
