- Summary:
- A volume of recipes preserved and written by Ilse Stern, from approximately 1910 to 1945. The recipes are written chiefly in cursive German in a preprinted ruled book with "Kochbuch" stamped in gold letters on the front cover. There are printed section tabs for each recipe category, such as potato dishes (Kartoffel-speisen) and Salads (Salate). Some preprinted tabs have been covered over with Stern's typed labels. The typed labels are for Cakes (Kuchen), confectioneries and cookies (Konfekt), and sweetened warm or cold dishes (Süss-speisen), each of these categories has been assigned two tabs. At the end of each section and at the end of the volume are recipes written in English in a different hand. These recipes are usually attributed to family members. Various recipes (Vershiedenes) is the last printed tab in the volume containing Jewish recipes including matzo balls, apple cake, and carrot slaw. Some recipe categories are blank. There is one clipping of a recipe laid in the volume. Stern is probably the daughter of the unnamed author of Ms. Coll. 1054, University of Pennsylvania (see Ms. Coll. 1054).
