Summary:
Combining a poetic and evocative voice with a page-turning plot full of adventure, Ian Chorao's debut novel describes the journey of a child, whose search for meaning leads him to the open road and, eventually, the seeds of wisdom. Bruiser is the nickname of a nine-year-old boy living in a ruined family in New York during the 1970s. Through his young eyes we see the deteriorating marriage of his distant father and struggling mother. Bruiser finds a kindred spirit in Darla, the precocious girl who lives across the alleyway. As the tension mounts, Darla conceives of a plan that takes Bruiser on the most frightening and revelatory journey of his life--one that will have both enlightening and tragic consequences. Written with all the innocence of a child encountering the adult arena for the first time, "Bruiser perfectly captures the boy's discovery that one must possess courage--and endure heartache--to make sense of a complex world.
