- This book is an Arabic translation of a Hebrew translation of the lost original Arabic text written by Averroës. Erwin Rosenthal edited and translated the Hebrew text (entitled Beʼur le-sefer hanhagat ha-medinah le-Aplaṭon), and the Hebrew edition and English translation were published together in 1956 under the title "Averroes' commentary on Plato's Republic." The present book is an effort to reconstruct the original Arabic text, as much as is possible, based on the Hebrew and English translations. The first edition of this reconstruction was published in 1998 with the title "al-Ḍarūrī fī al-siyāsah," but the translator now prefers the title "Jawāmiʻ siyāsat Aflāṭūn." Other translations have used the title "Talkhīṣ al-Siyāsah li-Aflāṭūn."
