Summary:
Precision livestock farming techniques are emerging as the agricultural industry struggles with issues such as animal welfare, disease, the environment, economics, and livestock management. These proceedings contain the reviewed papers from the July 2009 4th European Conference on Precision Livestock Farming, held in The Netherlands. The papers reflect the wide range of disciplines related to precision livestock farming, poultry and pig applications, livestock environments, wireless sensing, fencing, dairy fertility and calving management, animal identification, and locomotion detection. Some specific topics include an intelligent wireless accelerometer system for measuring gait features and lying times in dairy cows, electronic ear tags for pigs, injectable transponders for sheep identification, stakeless fencing for mountain pastures, satellite-based pasture management, reducing dust in poultry houses, and causes of lameness in broiler chickens. The book is distributed in the US by Enfield. Annotation ©2009 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
