Summary:
This European Association for Animal Production (EAAP) publication notes that unfavorable trends in cattle fertility, udder health, and locomotion have become apparent in the past decade, causing economic losses. Larger herds and the public's demands for a higher welfare standard for livestock have underscored the need for more robust animals. Topics include discussions of the general concept of robustness, breeding for improved disease resistance, longevity issues, secondary traits, the link between energy balance and fertility in dairy cows, and hot climate conditions. Some articles in the book, which summarizes current thinking on the topic of robustness, were derived from a joint session of EEAP Commissions and INTERBULL held in Dublin in August, 2007. Others were written by authors who have performed significant work in the field of robustness. A total of 86 authors from throughout the world contributed to the book.
