Summary:
The first great Russian writer to emerge from the ranks of the proletariat, Maxim Gorky (1868-1936) was born into poverty and orphaned at an early age. Entirely self-taught, he experienced firsthand the suffering, injustice, and despair with which he infused his tales. These vivid depictions of the miserable lives of the lowest classes, seething with protest against an uncaring society, won Gorky a devoted following. Three of Gorky's best works appear in this collection: the title story, in which a thieving hobo takes on a young apprentice; "Makar Chudra, " a story of a tempestuous romance; and "Twenty-six Men and a Girl, " in which a pathetic crew of pretzel-makers, laboring in a damp dungeon, destroy their only source of joy. Both students and general readers will appreciate this inexpensive collection of powerful tales, by one of Russia's greatest portrayers of the "lower depths."
