Summary:

The Book of Common Prayer contains the liturgy of the Church of England, and the reading of the Gospel has been an essential part of the eucharistic liturgy since the earliest years of the Church. The Gospel is always to be received with renewed love, and to be a fresh source of strength, assurance and hope. Hearing the familiar passages read aloud is central to the experience of worship, but quiet consideration of the Gospel outside public worship enriches both personal devotional life and deepens gratitude for the sacrament of the word. Although the Book of Common Prayer was not designed as a book of private devotions, nevertheless, its doctrine, language and spirituality have comforted and inspired countless individuals over the centuries as they have prayed with it. This companion provides commentary and devotional reflection on each of the Gospel readings in the Book of Common Prayer, for Sundays and for other occasions during the year. It is intended as an aid for those who preach, for those who prepare for worship by reading the scriptures of the day and for those who say the daily office alone. Each reflection is followed by a simple and heartfelt prayer and a quotation drawn from the breadth of the Christian tradition.
