- Son of Colonel David Potter (died 1805) and Mary Mason Potter (died 1783). William was one of eight children and lived in Bridgeton, New Jersey. During the War of 1812 Potter was commissioned by New Jersey Governor Aaron Ogden, as Major of the Detachment Infantry of New Jersey, a detailed militia assigned to guard to coast of Cape May, New Jersey. Potter served from 14 July 1813 to 30 September 1813. Sometime after 1820, William Potter moved to Ohio, as director of iron industries, where he resided until his death.

- Original letter written during the War of 1812 by William Potter to Governor Aaron Ogden on 5 August 1813. The letter discusses the desertion of men from their posts and the necessity for them to return in order to fortify the New Jersey coast from Goshen to Cape May Point. Potter also discusses the soldiers not receiving pay from the United States.
