- Summary:
- A century ago, the average Canadian lifespan was 60. Today, we can expect to live 20years longer. In addition to our extended lifespan, the baby boom generation, which comprises 30 percent of the Canadian population, is now entering retirement. As the arc of our individual and collective lives continues to change, so too will the experience of retirement. This short, accessible book by Thomas R. Klassen brings together the changes taking place and predictions for the years ahead. Separating fact from fiction, he considers retirement from many angles, including income security, the debate around mandatory retirement, and new approaches to phased retirement. As well, he looks at retirement from the perspectives of individuals and families, employers, and government officials amending public policy. The options for adapting to widespread retirement include some creative and forward-looking ideas. Retirement, predicts Klassen, will evolve into an adaptive and gradual transition, particularly given the diverse nature of baby boomers. In this changing face of retirement, the future holds a range of choices and challenges. Book jacket.
