Summary:
The great Jon Vickers sings one of his most acclaimed roles, the tortured fisherman of the title, in Britten's powerful drama. Hounded by the small-minded local townspeople, with only Ellen Orford (Lucine Amara) and Captain Balstrode (Geraint Evans) on his sie, Peter's slow descent into madness is as searing as it is inevitable. Colin Davis conducts, with Lili Chookasian as Auntie and Jean Madeira as Mrs. Sedley.
Contents:
Prologue: Peter Grimes! Peter Grimes!
Prologue: Peter Grimes, I here advise you
Prologue: The truth, the pity
Interlude I: Dawn
Oh hang at open doors the net, the cork
Hi! Give us a hand!
Grimes, you won't need help from now
Let her among you without fault cast the first stone
Look! The storm cone!
And do you prefer the storm
Picture what that day was like
What harbor shelters peace
Interlude II: Storm
Past time to close!
We live and let live
Have you heard?
Now the Great Bear and Pleiades
Old Joe has gone fishing
The bridge is down
Interlude III: Sunday morning
Glitter of waves
A bruise
Well, it's begun
This unrelenting work
Fool to let it come to this
We planned that their lives
Now is gossip put on trial
From the gutter
Interlude IV: Passacaglia
Go there! Go there!
In dreams I've built myself some kindlier home
Now! Now!
Peter Grimes! Peter Grimes!
Interlude V: Moonlight
Assign your prettiness to me
Pah!
Come along, doctor
Embroidery in childhood
Mr. Swallow! Mr. Swallow!
Who holds himself apart
Interlude VI
Grimes! Steady. There you are
Peter, we've come to take you home
To those who pass the borough sounds betray.
