Summary:
Renée Fleming stars in the title role of Carlisle Floyd's powerful opera, the story of a beautiful Tennessee girl who innocently incites the lust of her church Elders, leading to her denouncement as a sinner. Samuel Ramey is the Reverend Olin Blitch, whose concern for Susannah turns into desire, and Jerry Hadley sings Susannah's brother, Sam, who tries to take his revenge on the preacher. James Conlon conducts this broadcast performance from the opera's Met premiere run.
Contents:
Opening music
It's a hot night for dancin'
I am the Reverend Olin Blitch
Was y'ever at such a nice square dance, Little Bat?
Ain't it a pretty night!
Ain't it a pretty night
Sam! When did y'come?
That crick ought a be right about here
I ain't surprised
Little Bat, what you doin' here?
Feeble minded idjet!
How long's it gonna last, Sam?
That meetin' preacher must be a pow'rful one
Are you saved from sin, ready to meet your Lord?
I'm fixin' to tell y'bout a feller I knowed what was young an' smart an' rich
Come, sinner, tonight's the night to take a stand for God and the right
The trees on the mountains are cold and bare
That's mighty pretty singin', Susannah
I'm a lonely man, Susannah
Hear me, O Lord, I beseech Thee
Brethren an' sister'n
Hey there, little robin, I'm back agin
Come on in, Sam, an' wash up. Supper's ready
Susannah!
Git out!
