Summary:
Take one ascetic monk named Athanaël and one ravishingly beautiful courtesan named Thaïs, add Massenet's sensual, melodious music, with equal dashes of eroticism and religious fervor--and you have a powerful opera that is at once a celebration of the sacred and the profane, of flesh and soul. This rarity had not been heard at the Met for almost 40 years when it was brought back as a vehicle for the great soprano Beverly Sills and the magnetic singing actor Sherrill Milnes. Together, they masterfully bring to life the searing conflict at the heart of the drama.
Contents:
Voici le pain
et le sel
Le voici! Le voici!
Honte! Horreur!
Mon fils, ne nous mêlons jamais
Prélude
Voilà donc la terrible cité!
Ah! Ah! Ah!
Athanaël, c'est toi!
Je vais donc te revoir
Garde-toi bien! Voici ta terrible ennemie!
C'est Thaïs, I'idole fragile
Quel est cet étranger
Qui te fait si sévère
Non! Non! Je hais vos fausses ivresses!
Ah! Je suis seule, seule enfin!
Étranger, te voilà, comme tu l'avais dit!
Eh bien. Fais-moi connaître
Je suis Athanaël, moine d'Antinoé!
Méditation
Père, Dieu m'a parlé par toi voix!
Quand Nicias m'aimait
Suivez-moi tous, amis!
Celle qui vient est plus bel
Eh! C'est lui! Athanaël
L'oasis
L'ardent soleil m'écrase
Ah! Des gouttes de sang coulent de ses pieds blancs
O messager de Dieu
Baigne d'eau mes mains et mes lèvres
Pater noster, qui es in coelis
La paix du Seigneur soit avec toi
Que le ciel est pesant!
C'est lui qui vient!
Thaïs va mourir!
Seigneur, ayez pitié de moi
C'est toi, mon père.
