- When an elderly, miserly bachelor marries a smart young woman, there's always trouble ahead. In Donizetti's version of the ancient story that trouble is the source of unending humor and delight for the audience--doubly so when the great singing actor Salvatore Baccaloni (in his first Met season) is the old curmudgeon, Don Pasquale. Of course, with the ever-enchanting Bidu Sayão as the bride, who could blame him for falling in love? This is witty vocal acting at its best.
