Summary:
Verdi's gripping tale of Sicilians rising against the occupying French stars Renata Scotto in her only broadcast of this rarely heard masterpiece. From the beginning of the opera, when Elena (Scotto) sings an "innocent" song fanning the people's resentment against the foreign army, to the end, when the ringing of her wedding bells signals the start of the revolt, Scotto's artistry blazes. James Levine leads the Met Orchestra and Chorus in a wonderfully idiomatic performance, and Ruggero Raimondi is magnificent as Procida, the outlawed Sicilian leader.
Contents:
Overture
A te, ciel natio
Quals'offre al mio sguardo
In alto mare, deh! Tu calma, O dio possente
D'ira fremo all'aspetto
O donna!
Qual è il tuo nome?
Temerario! qual ardire!
Prelude
O patria
O tu, Palermo
Ai nostri fidi nunzio
Miei fidi amici
Presso alla tomba ch'apresi
Cavalier, questo foglio
Le vaghe spose affè!
Il rossor mi coprì!
Si, m'abboriva ed a ragion!
Il cavaliero ricusava
In braccio alle dovizie
Sogno, o son desto?
Mentre contemplo quel volto amato
Parola fatale!
Ombra diletta, che in ciel riposi
O splendide feste!
Di tai piacer, per te novelli
Fra ceppi, olà s'adduca
E di Monforte il cenno!
Giorno di pianto
O sdegni miei
Arrigo! ah, parli a un core
Pensando a me
Amica man
Addio, mia patria, invendicato
De profundis clamavi
Ministro di morte, arresta!
Si celebri alfine
Mercè, dilette amiche
Al tuo cor generoso
Sorte fatal!
In fra noi due s'oppone
Ah vieni, il mio mortal dolore.
