Summary:
Halévy's gripping opera had not been heard at the Met for almost 70 years when it was revived for tenor Neil Shicoff a month before this broadcast. His searing account of Eléazar, a Jewish goldsmith burdened by a terrible secret quickly became a modern operatic classic. Soile Isokoski is his beloved daughter Rachel, in love with a man who turns out not to be Samuel, a simple workman in her father's shop, but Prince Léopold (Eric Cutler). Rachel is sent to her gruesome death by Cardinal de Brogni (Ferruccio Furlanetto), who discovers Eléazar's secret too late.
Contents:
Overture
Te Deum Laudamus
Hosanna, plaisir, ivresse
Ah! Mon Père!
Si La riguer et la vengeance
Loin de son amie
Samuel, c'est done vous!
Ht́ons-nous, car l'heure s'avance
Ô surprise nouvelle!
Ô mon Dieu que j'implore
O Dieu, Dieu de nos pères
Si trahison ou perfidie
Dieu, que ma voix tremblante
On frappe, ô terruer ; Tu possèdes, dit-on
Mon père n'est plus là
Il va venir!
C'est lui! la force m'abandonne!
Lorasqu'à toi je me suis donnée
Je vois son front coupable
Eh bien donc, puis qu'ici ma fureur
Assez longtemps la crainte
Tandis qu'il sommeille
Je me soutiens à peine!
Qui vous amène?
Sonnez, clairons, que vos chants de victoire
Je frissonne et succombe
Eh bien!
