Summary:
Goethe's book, The sorrows of Young Werther, first appeared in 1774, a powerful story of an impossible love which set off a wave of suicides across Europe. Authorities were horrified, but the emotions of the younger generation had been unleashed. Massenet's opera captures all of the pathos and tragedy of Goethe's story. Alfredo Kraus's aristocratic but fervent singing conveys every nuance of Werther's soul. The warm, feminine Régine Crespin is Charlotte, the duty-bound woman who returns his love but is ultimately unattainable.
Contents:
Prélude
Assez! Assez!
Noël! Jésus vient de naître
Alors, c'est bien ici
O nature, pleine de grće
Jésus vient de naître!
O spectacle idéal d'amour et d'innocence
Sophie!
Albert! Toi de retour?
Elle m'aime!
Quelle prière de reconnaissance et d'amour
Interlude
Il faut nous séparer
Mais vous ne saver rien de moi
Vous avez dit vrai!
Rêve! Extase! Bonheur!
Charlotte! Charlotte!
Prélude
Vivat Bacchus! Semper vivat!
Trois mois! Voici trois mois que nous sommes unis!
Un autre est son époux!
J'aurais sur ma poitrine
Au bonheur dont mon ḿe est pleine
Frère, voyez le beau bouquet!
Ai-je dit vrai?
Ah! qu'il est loin ce jour
Oui! ce qu'elle m'ordonne
Mais venez donc! Le cortège s'approche
Werther, Werther
Je rous écris de ma petite chamber
Des cris joyeux d'enfants
Bonjour, grande soeur!
Ah le rire est béni!
Va! Laisse couler mes larmes
Tiens! Charlotte, crois-moi
Ah! Mon courage m'abandonne!
Oui, c'est moi! Je reviens!
Toute mon ḿe est là!
Pourquoi me réveiller
N'achevez pas! Hélas!
Ah! Moi! Moi! Dans ses bras!
. Prends de deuil, ô nature!
Werther est de retour
La nuit de Noël
Werther! Werther!
Non! Tu n'as rien fait que de juste et de bon
Et, moi, Werther, et moi je t'aime!
Noël! Noël! Noël!
Ah! Ses yeux se ferment ; J ésus vient de naître.
