Summary:
Sherrill Milnes brought vivid theatrical force to his portrait of Simon Boccanegra, the 14th century Doge of Genoa who battles private demons and political enemies. Only the greatest Verdi baritones manage to put their individual stamp on this monumental role, and Milnes succeeds brilliantly, mixing poetry and power to reveal Boccanegra's heart to the audience. Anna Tomowa-Sintow is the long-lost daughter he finds, but, he discovers, she loves Gabriele Adorno (Vasile Moldoveanu), a man determined to destroy him. James Levine's superb conducting and Tito Capobianco's dramatic production add to the gripping performance.

Preludio
Come in quest'ora bruna
Cielo di stelle orbato
Vieni a mirar la cerula
Propizio ei giunge!
Il Doge vien
Orfanella il tetto umile
Dinne
alcun là non vedesti?
Che ripose?
Messeri, il re di Tartaria
Nell'ora soave
Plebe! Patrizi!
Ecco la spada
Quei due vedesti?
Prigionero in qual loco m'adduci?
Udisti? Vil di segno!
Sento avvampar nell'anima
Tu qui? Amelia!
Figlia? Sì afflitto, padre mio?
Oh Amelia, ami un nemico!
Perdon, perdon, Amelia
All'armi, all'armi o Liguri
Evviva il Doge! Libero sei
M'ardon le tempia
Come un fantasima Fiesco t'appar
Piango, perchè mi parla
Chi veggo!
Tu qui?
Gran Dio, li benedici
