Summary:
In the neoliberal era-after histories of slavery, colonialism, apartheid and paternalism - investment in the valley has generally turned from wine production to property speculation. Development now hinges on commodification of landscape as a tourist and elite farming destination. In this book the unintended consequences of real estate development in an area of agricultural production around Boschendal form the backdrop for an investigation into social transformation processes post 1994. This careful, multi-faceted study asks how the people of the valley respond to changing land use and how that relates to the historical and spatial contexts of the valley. It shows the creative tactics poor people use to survive, whether it is by turning to Pentecostalism, patrolling respectability or negotiating gendered norms that frame respectability and entrepreneurship By exploring Solms-Delta farm as a case study, the book also looks at how initiatives can open up real possibilities for empowerment.
