Summary:
In African Pentecostalism, Nigerian-born Ogbu Kalu provides a continentwide narrative account of Africa's burgeoning Pentecostal movement. The statistics behind this phenomenon are astounding-about 107 million Africans are Pentecostals, and the numbers continue to rise. Kalu's groundbreaking study reveals that the Pentecostal movement is not chiefly the result of foreign intervention. Rather, he identifies and emphasizes the native character of African Pentecostalism while paying close attention to the influences of non-African factors.
Through an analytical engagement with the current scholarship, Kalu balances global processes with local identities, blending seamlessly Western and African viewpoints. His unique perspective allows for a holistic understanding of African Pentecostalism that combines the historical, cultural, instrumentalist, and religious dimensions of a complex religious landscape, and invites us to explore a broad range of issues such as political theology, gender and authority, funding, theology, and the impact of reverse flow on African immigrant communities.
The only comprehensive look at African Pentecostalism, this study touches upon the movement's identity, the role of missionaries, media and popular culture, women, ethics, Islam, and immigration. The resulting work will prove invaluable to anyone interested in Christianity outside the West.
