Summary:
The global "precariat," in the view of Standing (economic security, U. of Bath, UK), is a class-in-the-making that has emerged out of the neoliberal insistence on labor flexibility. Not entirely synonymous with the working poor, the precariat are those who lack the elements of labor security pursued by the social democratic parties and trade unions as part of their "industrial citizenship" agenda after the Second World War. Lacking a solidaristic labor community, the precariat suffers from alienation and a sense of instrumentality in their work. Standing warns that the precariat represents a danger because its fears and insecurities render them prone to manipulation by populist and neo-fascist politics, as one can already see in Europe, the United States, and elsewhere.
