- Summary:
- In this first volume of a two-volume set, Carrier (emeritus, biology, Albion College) et al gather contributors in marine science, biology, fisheries, and bioinformatics to explain the latest scientific understanding of elasmobranches. Section 1 covers phylogeny and zoogeography, and section 2 deals with form, function, and physiological processes, with chapters on areas such as locomotion, prey capture, feeding, metabolism, sensory physiology, and hormonal regulation. Section 3 addresses ecology and life history issues, such as age and growth assessment, stock assessment, population dynamics, parasites, and habitat use. The book is illustrated with color and b&w photos. This second edition reflects developments in the field over the past 10 years. There are new chapters on emerging technologies for tagging elasmobranches and recent advances in elasmobranch immunology, plus updated material on reproduction and applications of forensic genetics.
