- Summary:
- Disability and Justice: The Capabilities Approach in Practice is an interdisciplinary examination of the practical application of the capabilities approach viewed through the lens of the experience of disability. Christopher Riddle suggests that the capabilities approach is unable to properly identify both those who are in need and the extent to which assistance is required. Furthermore, he suggests that if this approach to justice were capable of assessing need, it would fail, to be as stigma-sensitive as other approaches of justice. More pointedly, the capabilities approach would have the possibility of further stigmatizing those requiring accommodation. Finally, the book argues that health and the absence of disability belong in a category of functionings that are of special moral importance-a fact the capabilities approach fails to recognize. Riddle undertakes careful and critical examination of vital foundational concepts prior to closely scrutinizing the capabilities approach in an attempt to move towards an inclusive society.
