Summary:
This study examines the interpersonal encounter, an issue which is central to late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century travel writing written in French and Italian, but has often been overlooked. Structured typologically, each chapter focuses on a different activity that typically brings the traveler-protagonist into contact with others, from guiding and interpreting to starting and photography. Drawing on literary critical studies of travel writing, sociological and anthropological approaches to tourism, and research on French and Italian studies, Interpersonal Encounters in Contemporary Travel Writing locates the concept of the encounter within the context of modern tourism.
