Wiggin (German, U. of Pennsylvania) traces one route of newness as the originally French literary genre, the novel, or romance, negotiated sometimes hostile borders and became naturalized throughout Europe about 1700. She discusses fashion restructuring the literary field, curing the French disease, the roman become both poetical and popular in 1688, and bringing the roman to market in 1696.
