1.首次在亚里士多德相关思想的基础上, 对"连续"和"断裂"这两个概念进行了深入的分析, 并用以研究中西文明发展的连续性问题, 对西方文明发展以断裂为特征, 中国文明发展具有连续性的特点做了理论的说明. 2.在悉心研读理解原著的基础上, 揭示了黑格尔历史哲学以自由为内容的精神发展观与真实历史发展过程的背离. 3.系统研读马克思恩格斯相关著作, 深入理解社会交往与历史发展之间的辩证关系, 指出人类社会横向之间的交往决定了纵向的历史发展, 而纵向历史发展又成为横向的每一个社会的前提, 在此基础上, 对中国历史的连续性与统一性的辩证关系做了具有创新意义的理论阐述. 4.从中西比较的角度, 在历史、史学和理论三个层次上, 对论题展开论述, 这是首次, 因而具有创新意义. 5.综合以上诸点, 在理论上对黑格尔关于中国历史的曲解和误解及其欧洲中心论作出了迄今为止最有理论力度的批判, 把有关黑格尔历史哲学的批判推进到一个新的阶段.
