- Summary:
- The Wall Street meltdown of 2008 triggered the greatest economic crises of our lifetimes-but the political response to that economic disaster was, for the most part, remarkably muted and moderate. Nancy Bermeo and Larry M. Bartels have assembled a distinguished team of scholars to explore this surprising turn to events. Their analyses range from detailed participant observation of political resentment in small-town Wisconsin to systematic statistical analyses of hundreds of protests across Eastern Europe. They find that voters vigorously punished incumbent governments regardless of ideology for presiding over hard times. Yet support for extremist parties was modest; public opinion regarding redistribution, immigration, and the euro remained relatively stable; popular mobilizations, with few exceptions, were short-lived; and the mobilizations that did occur were over whelmingly in response to austerity programs rather than sheer economic distress. By placing these political responses to the Great Recession in a broad comparative and historical context, this volume sheds important light on prevailing theories of political behavior and on the nature of contemporary democratic politics.
