Penn Libraries copy has dated 19th-century ms. inscription ("Awarded to George S. Derby[?] for excelling in Written Spelling during the Term ending June 23. 1849. D.B. Tower Park School.") in brown ink noting the award of this book to George S. Derby by David B. Tower of the Park Latin School, Boston, Mass., for excellence in written spelling; a further note in blue ink reads "(10 1/2 yrs.)", probably indicating George's age at the time.
Penn Libraries copy bound in publisher's red cloth; left board has blind-stamped border around central gold-stamped illustration (Franklin flying his kite while a boy looks on, both figures seated); right board has blind-stamped border around central blind-stamped ornament; gold-stamped spine; decorative endpapers.
