Summary:
This is the first of two volumes inspired by a 2003 international symposium held at the U. of Ghana, Legon. The theme was "Canonical Works and Continuing Innovation in African Arts & Humanities." In their preface the editors applaud the assembly of speakers from all over the world and the cross-disciplinary discourse. They lament the fact that such stimulating opportunities are rare, and this compilation is intended as, essentially, a substitute or simulation. Selections include decades-old classics as well as the work of relatively unknown writers in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and elsewhere. Arrangement of the selections is in sections pertaining to the broad themes of knowledge production, actions and beliefs, development, the human condition, and history. A sampling of topics: social science as imperialism, making sense of political violence in postcolonial Africa, environmental degradation and population growth in northern Ghana, and writing women into Ghanian history. The index includes both volumes. Appended is a list of style specifications for preparing publishable manuscripts. Distribution in North America is by the African Books Collective.
