Biography/History:

Gray was born 7 July 1889 at Cambridge, England to Arthur (1852-1940) and Alice Honora Gray (1858-1927). John Milner attended King's College and trained as a solicitor. He served in World War I and discharged with the rank of Captain. In 1920 Gray entered the Colonial Civil Service and was sent to Uganda. He was later transfered to Gambia where he became judge of the Supreme Court, serving in this capacity from 1934 to 1942, and was named acting governor in 1935 and 1940. In 1943 Gray became Chief Justice of Zanzibar where he led the way to establish juvenile courts. He was knighted in 1944. After his retirement in 1952 Gray remained in Zanzibar to conduct research resulting in books and articles about the region. Gray eventually returned to Cambridge where he died in January 1970.

Summary:

Comprises two typescript articles regarding Zanzibar written approximately 1955. The first is entitled The Hadimu and Tumbatu of Zanzibar. The essay describes the villages and history of the peoples. The article was published posthumously in 1977. The second article entitled Bull-baiting in Pemba explains how bullfighting is distinctive on Pemba Island from other forms and cultures such as in Spain and France. Each typescript has editorial notes and includes bibliographical references.
